Vafþrúðnismál (“The Sayings of Vafþrúðnir”) is one of the mythological poems from the Poetic Edda. It centers on the god Odin, who engages in a contest of wisdom with the giant Vafþrúðnir, renowned for his vast knowledge.

The poem is structured as a dialogue in which Odin, disguised as a traveler, challenges Vafþrúðnir to a battle of wits. They take turns asking and answering questions about the origins of the world, the structure of the cosmos, and the fate of gods and humans. The stakes are high: the loser forfeits his life. Through this exchange, the poem presents a rich overview of Norse cosmology and mythological knowledge.

Vafþrúðnismál is part of the Poetic Edda, a collection of Old Norse poems preserved in medieval Icelandic manuscripts, the most important being the so-called Codex Regius. Unlike more practical or ethical poems, it focuses on mythological lore, including creation, the end of the world (Ragnarök), and what follows after. The poem culminates in Odin asking a question only he can answer, revealing his identity and securing his victory.
