Baldrs draumar (“Baldr’s Dreams”), also known as Vegtamskviða (“The Lay of Vegtam) is a short mythological poem about the troubling dreams experienced by Baldr, the son of Odin, which foretell his approaching death and the sorrow soon to come upon the gods.
Seeking answers, Odin rides to the realm of the dead and awakens a völva, a seeress, to question her about Baldr’s fate. Through their exchange, the poem reveals themes of prophecy, death, and the inevitability of Ragnarök that recur throughout Old Norse mythology.
The oldest surviving source for the poem is the medieval Icelandic manuscript AM 748 I a 4to.
